The 23-year-old’s representative, Aleksandar Bursac, had not given up hope yesterday that the transfer would still go ahead.

“There was an issue, and I think that one has been resolved,” he said.

Bursac added his belief that it is now up to Saints whether the move proceeds.

“The boy himself wants to come to Southampton and I don’t foresee any issues unless Southampton pull the plug,” he said.

Liddle was in charge of Darlington last season prior to moving to the Stadium of Light and had the England youth international on-loan.

“Results didn’t go our way but Jordan got a really good introduction to first-team football,” Liddle explained to safc.com.

“Speaking to Mark Prudhoe [Academy goalkeeping coach] it’s done him the world of good to play in a different environment.

“He came out with huge amount of credit and put in some fantastic performances, which I’m sure will benefit him in the long run.”

The Argentina international has spent three-quarters of his two-year stint with Latics away on loan, a six-month spell with Serie A outfit Genoa in 2010-11 followed by the whole of last term at his former club Estudiantes.

“Mauro will be joining us next Monday, and we are all very excited about that,” Latics boss Roberto Martinez told the Wigan Evening Post.

“He has just had a very challenging season at Estudiantes, where it was extremely difficult for the team as a whole.

“But in the second half of the campaign, you started to see the best of Mauro. He scored plenty of important goals, and he was showing a real enjoyment of his football again.

“Mauro has also had some very good news in his private life recently, he has just become a dad, and we are all very pleased for him.

“I just feel now is the right time for him to come back to Wigan and settle back in to life in England, and be himself as he has been able to do back home.”
